Goodfoot x New Era Double-Brim - Cancelled/Resurrected

Goodfoot x New Era Double Brim

Originally slated to be a Goodfoot x New Era collaboration, these double-brimmed caps never saw the light of day.

Looks like they're being resurrected independently by the designer!

Dethroner's Well-Balanced Bastards of the Day

Well Balanced Bastards
Well Balanced Bastards

Checking some one of the RSS feeds I visit less than daily I stumbled on this funny entry from Dethroner.

Digging a bit deeper, it looks like the source of these images is a book from Visionary World Publishers entitled "Bikes of Burden". The book is a tribute to the Vietnamese motorcyles which is known for carrying everything under the sun. The pictures themselves were found on the Lords of the Logistic page.

Dethroner by the way is a terrific concept in websites - each week they choose a different focus for their posts; from beer, cars, cooking, and fitness to danger, dogs, fighting and smoking. The posts are witty, selfless and make for a great read.

Ironic Site of the day Award: Wishingline

posted: Wednesday September 20, 2006 - 11:21 AM

Design Is Ironic
So there's this meme going on "Design Is..." and various noteable bloggers in the sphere are creating desktop backgrounds with such phrases as: Design Is More Than Graphic Design, Design Is Just Owning a Clip Art Gallery, Design is More Than just Making Things Up etc.

What strucks me as ironic was the one from Wishingline entitled "Design Is More Than Choosing Nice Fonts". As can be seen from the screenshot above, the fonts on the post are seriously messed up. I've noticed this before in a few other places (most notably Peppermint Tea) and shrugged it off as a designer's poor sense of usability - but the Wishingline irony was too good to pass up.

So I test the site in IE. Same font issue. Then I asked my buddy sfdesigner to have a look on his MacBook Pro - and the fonts looked great! Had a look in FF on OSX just for good measure. Looked great there too.

So back to Windows and a solution to this problem. I check Wishingline's CSS which states: body {color: #7C8187; font-family: "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans", Lucida, "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 130%; text-align: center;}.

Well, it turns out that Lucida is a Windows system font and viewed without Cleartype (turned off by default) looks like muck in the browser.

While us Windows users are obviously inferior at least support in this case is offered in the form of "Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif" some 5 levels deep. Had this been placed immediately after "Lucida Grande" however, the site would render beautifully on both platforms. And so it can be safely said that design actually is more than choosing nice fonts!

Congratulations Wishingline. You've just made ironic site of the day!

Not to be a spoil-sport, here's my meme in all of its 800 x 600 goodness. Design is more than OSX. All in good fun of course :)

Update: 09.21.06 - See comments. The CSS has been updated. The site looks very pretty now :)

Metromint Water is Nasty

Metromint Water
I've seen advertisements for MetroMint dubiously claiming something to the effect of it being the most requested water in bars and clubs (or was that restaurants?). A bottle costs around $1.50

Well here's my response to that - a) I've never seen it in a restaurant, bar, club, breakfast nook, or vending machine anywhere in San Francisco - a major metropolitan area. b) Metromint is icky. I bought a bottle at Safeway over the weekend (hail to the power of advertising)

Metromint Spearmint water tastes like if I brushed my teeth and collected the gargled spit water for a week then bottled and sold it.

Cool Hunting would disagree but I stand by my review. Ingredients are Purified Water and Mint. I struggled to finish a bottle of this yesterday and was unsuccesful. I tried drinking it alone, with fruit (grapes, banana, strawberries, rasberries), with chocolate, with coffee, and with salad - a variety of compliments to any mint water.

Worst Date Ever!

Worst Date Ever!
We have all had bad dates but this takes the cake. This just tells you how tough it is to be single nowadays.

This was on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. Jay went into the audience to find the most embarrassing first date that a woman ever had.

The winner described her worst first date experience. There absolutely no question as to why her tale took the prize!

Keep note however of the source of this article. Clever cross-promotion action going on ;-)

Funny nonetheless!

Ironic site of the day - click for full size
Goes to... an article at InfoWorld entitled: What users hate most about Web sites

The page contains 2 pop windows, one embedded video, a flash animation of a curling page that takes over the entire view (and animates when not taking over the page), right-side navigation (which prompted my other post), and 5 advertisements that I could count (3 of which are animated and none of which include the above mentioned distractions).

Wow, if that isn't just about the most embarrasing thing ever.

p.s. I've contributed a related perspective on the Extra! Extra! blog entitled: Usability and Right-side Blindness

Yellow Snow and Peanut Butter

posted: Wednesday January 18, 2006 - 3:30 PM

Snow!
A group of us are driving up to Tahoe this weekend for some fun in the snow. The weather forecast looks good. So good in fact that it inspired a spontaneous poem from my dear friend:

a good piece of chocolate, layered with yellow snow and peanut butter.
by the fire.
holding greg's hand.
how beautiful and precious it will be, i cannot put into words.
love.
yes.
peanut butter and yellow snow.
and love.
how pretty the day, and crisp the air in the snow.
and greg's pretty pretty face, covered in chocolate, peanut butter, and yellow snow.
lovely it is. along with the day.
that's how my motherfucking bitches roll.
in the snow.

Ever been caught in the "you said" / "no I didn't" loop? (You said you'd come call before you come! No I didn't - I'd said I'd just pop over out the blue), well our dearly departed (from Comedy Central) Dave Chapelle has the solution. Your personal, affordable, and in-home stenographer - just like the courts have! Your in-home stenographer will record all the conversations between you and your partner for later reference. 102 Minutes from San Mateo to Treasure Island

posted: Thursday December 22, 2005 - 4:18 PM

So it's the last day of the week before a 4-day vacation. Wouldn't it just be so great to leave work a bit early? Hell Yeah!

I wonder if I'm the only one thinking this? Hmm... apparently not.

Bay Area traffic is pretty quickly looking like Los Angeles traffic. 102 minutes to drive 22 miles at 4 in the afternoon?? C'mon now... the roads aren't that wet!

Energy Fiend is a great place to waste away your day while learning some interesting "facts". For instance, did you know it would take 106 No-Doz pills to kill a 155 pound person? Or that 132 cans of Red Bull would do the same? How about an entire database of these fun little facts - Death by Caffeine and Death by Penguin Mints. Top it off with some insight into the various ingredients found in these energy drinks and you've got yourself a real winner!

The Gallery of Regrettable Food

posted: Tuesday October 18, 2005 - 8:42 AM

The Gallery of Regrettable Food
The Gallery of Regrettable Food is a simple introduction to poorly photographed foodstuffs and horrid recipes. There's not a single edible dish in the entire collection. The pictures in the books are ghastly - the Italian dishes look like a surgeon got a sneezing fit during an operation, and the queasy casseroles look like something on which the janitor dumps sawdust. But you have to enjoy the spirit behind the books - cheerful postwar perfect housewifery is taught in every book. Sure, you'll fall short of the ideal. But what's an ideal for if not to show up your shortcomings?
