Hip Hop's Roots: B-boys and Style Wars

Following through from the latest Beautiful/Decay mailout I found a series of historical videos on the founding days of hip-hop.

The first video is an interview with the director of Style Wars - widely regarded as the first mainstream documentary to chronicle the Graffiti movement in 1980's New York. "Kids Against the World" is an interview with Director Tony Silver by Danny Lee of Calico Arts.

The next find is a 3-part series of videos filmed by Henry Chalfant who co-created Style Wars. Titled "All City (1983)" the video looks like a VHS rip but is a real find considering its relevance to the b-boy movement. Plenty of breakdancing, graffiti, and rapping is showcased and split up into three parts makes for a righteous dose of history.

HipHopSite Closing Shop: 30% off everything!

HipHopSite.com

From the HipHopSite.com mailout: With the 5-year lease for HipHopSite's retail store ending next month, we were at a crossroads. Do we renew the lease for another 5 years and continue to face the steady decline of the music retail industry? Or do we take things in a bold new direction?

The decision we have come to is this. HipHopSite will be re-launched in the coming weeks as a 100% exclusive DIGITIAL DOWNLOAD site (yeah, you will be able to download stuff for your MP3 player). In the meantime, you can still come here to get your usual news, reviews, and interviews like always, but we are phasing out the mail order retail end of it completely.

But in order to do that, we've got to clean this place out - and we need your help! So, starting NOW, all orders placed online and all walk-in customers to our Maryland Parkway store, will receive 30% off their entire order (before shipping).

We will not be bringing any new stock in or restocking old items, however in the coming weeks we will be adding plenty of used vinyl to the online store catalog (that is, the stuff that doesn't sell out locally in this huge sale). Please note, when checking out, your order total on your HipHopSite invoice will appear as normal, but the 30% will be taken off the total before shipping when your credit card is charged.

Personally I took the opportunity to pick up the following releases: Juggaknots - "Use Your Confusion", Pizzo / DJ Five - "Backpack Thugs 2006 Megamix (Free w/ $50 Purchase)", Brother Ali - "The Undisputed Truth", Bonde Do Role - "With Lasers", The Cinematic Orchestra - "Ma Fleur", and Chrisette Michelle - "I Am".

Artwork and clothing Tycho and ISO50

If quality is a judge of talent then Tycho/ISO50 has no equal. It's already been some 4 years since I first discovered his clothing, then artwork and later to my great surprise, music.

Tycho is nothing short of prolific - releasing a steady and consistent stream of prints, t-shirts, and music that delight the eyes and ears.

To date I own 3 shirts, 4 prints (threee of which I've paid to have framed) and one cd.

Shockingly, such amazing work comes and a very affordable price - $15 for a print and $22 for a t-shirt. It's people like Tycho that make it tough for anyone else to charge more :)

Pictured here is a very small sampling of the latest Tycho output. Head over to the official Tycho website(s) for more.

David Choe was recently commissioned to paint the entire corporate offices of Facebook.com

All in all - 2 different office buildings, all three floors including stairs, elevators, bathrooms and fixtures - in 9 days.

Pretty intense art for a corporate office!
