Recommended Hip-Hop: KMD - Mr Hood (reissued!)
posted: Sunday September 17, 2006 - 9:39 PM
KMD history via Discogs: KMD consisted of brothers Zevlove X and DJ Subroc along with thier mate Onyx. They released the classic album Mr. Hood in 1990 on Elektra records. Criminally slept on it is only getting the props it deserves today.
Politics and bullshit lead Elektra to drop the group in 94 (now without Onyx) before the release of thier second album Black Bastards. Around this time Subroc was tragically killed in a car accident, and Zev, understandably disillusioned, took some time out from the record industry.
He resurfaced under the metal mask of MF Doom in the late 90's, on b-boy philanthropist Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em label. His album Operation Doomsday pretty much forms a trilogy with the two KMD albums before it (the second now released through Subverse records) and has garnered much praise from the Hiphop world.
Album description via Amazon: KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or a positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) was a Hip Hop group in the early 90s perhaps best known for launching the career of acclaimed MC/Producer MF Doom (known during his KMD tenure as Zev Love X). After guesting on 3rd Bass' "The Gas Face," the trio (Zev, brother Subroc, and Onyx) released the acclaimed and overlooked "Mr. Hood" full-length. Their political outlook was similar to the group Brand Nubian, who guested on Hood; however, the style was more comical and included a great deal of clips from old children's recordings, mostly notably a sample of the Seaseme Street character Bert on the single "Who Me?".
This is the official Elektra Records/Traffic Entertainment Group re-release with original artwork and track listing in it's entirety. Cutting edge, ahead of it's time production and skits from KMD and Stimulated Dummies (John Gamble and Mr. Dante Ross). Features the singles "Peachfuzz", "Who Me?" and "Nitty Gritty" (feat. Brand Nubian).
KMD's "Mr Hood" will be (re)released on September 26, 2006

Major label debut for Lupe Fiasco on Atlantic Records. With executive production by Jay-Z and backing from Kanye West and Mike Shinoda (aka Fort Minor) of Linkin Park. Also featuring artwork by none other than Chuck Anderson of No Pattern
Description: With Food & Liquor, Lupe Fiasco sets no boundaries for himself as he creates a revolutionary brand of alternative hip-hop in which he shares his mind through original storytelling techniques. He takes hip-hop off the streets and onto the half pipe, off the streets and into the sneaker shops, off the streets and into the hands and in front of real people.

Kehinde Wiley Untitled Busts
posted: Monday September 11, 2006 - 8:43 AM
Although, Kehinde Wiley's works reference specific paintings by Titian and Tiepolo, he draws from a range of art historical and vernacular styles in his compositions, from the French Rococo to the contemporary urban street. Wiley collapses history and style into a uniquely contemporary vision. He describes his approach as 'interrogating the notion of the master painter, at once critical and complicit.' He makes figurative paintings that 'quote historical sources and position young black men within that field of 'power."
His 'slightly heroic' figures, sometimes larger than life size, are depicted in poses of power and spiritual awakening. He deliberately mixes images of power and spirituality, using them as a filter in the portrayal of masculinity. After receiving his MFA from Yale in 2001 Kehinde Wiley began exhibiting at Deitch Projects in New York and Rhona Hoffman in Chicago. His exhibition Infinite Mobility recently appeared at the Brooklyn Museum in New York and is traveling to The Columbus Museum.
