Get Paid to Represent TRUTH this Summer
Truth (from all those anti-tobacco ads) is looking for people to tour this summer and spread the message. Qualification are that; you must be 21 or over, be willing to travel from June through August (AND1 Mix Tape / Vans Tour type stuff), attend 2 seminars in May, be friendly, outgoing and comfortable in front of crowds, and generally get along well with others.

This is a paying gig with accomodations provided (tour bus or hotel), full board, and days off to play.

Applications must be submitted by April 12th 2006 at 2pm

Who knows? You may just be the next person in one of those truth ads on television!

Hope to Others - One sip at a time

Hope to Others - One sip at a time
HtoO, Hope to Others, is natural spring water that comes from protected springs 4,000 feet high in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains. The springs are located in Baxter, California on a thousand acre timberland preserve that is zoned to restrict commercial development and protect the natural ecology.

HtoO is committed to helping a wide range of charities from educational and housing needs to cancer research and environmental concerns. 100% of after-tax profits go to any number of charities including: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, The Leroy Haynes Center for Children and Family Services, Operation Smile, The Blind Children's Center, Bridges to Understanding, The Art of Elysium, The Cambodian Landmine Museum Relief Fund, Mabopane Foundation, THe Salvation Army, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and The Rap FOundation.

So what can one bottled water company do?

Considering that approximately 35 billion dollars are spent on bottled water annually, we think quite a lot. Imagine, tapping into just one per cent of this market represents over 300 million dollars per year that can be used to feed the hungry, aid the sick, build homes for the needy, and to help restore the earth's environment. Inspired by Paul Newman's "Newman's Own" model, HtoO will donate 100% of it's after-tax profits to charities around the world.

Zorbas Pizza San Bruno Review

Zorba's Pizza San Bruno is Mad Wack
I wouldn't normally make these sorts of posts on JL, but I feel the need to let the pizza eating Bay Area know...

It's a cold Sunday night and we're at Demitra's house along with Shimone and Marble. Fernet, Hangar One Vodka, Fantome Saisson Ale, and Grey Goose + Powerade cocktails are flowing all up in our systems.

The desire to eat is slowing consuming us and we decide to order in. Pizza seems to be the simple choice as it's fast, cheap, and who doesn't like pizza? We decide to go with Zorba's instead of ordering from Toto's like we normally do for two reasons... it'll be faster considering we can literally SEE the Zorba's pizza sign from the house across the street and, we've never had their pizza so it'll be something new. Something new it definitely was...

We search for their website and upon finding it we're greeted with a real treat - a website fit for the gods - and with midi Greek music playing in the background we're browsing their site filled with images that are full-on uncompressed seven-megabyte files which take several minutes to load. Shimone and I are loving every moment of it - it's circa 1996!

I call them and place my order, pointing out that we're "directly across the street from you guys", to which the guy responds "see you in 45 minutes". I think to myself "they always say that" and tell Shimone "they'll be here in 10".

We wait about half an hour before wondering why it's taking so long to walk a pizza across the street, then another ten minutes, another ten, and finally it's been an hour since we called so I decide it'd be best if I checked in on them. I went back to their wondrous website and found their phone number again (after clicking through several pages looking for the number and then finding it back on the homepage - and only the homepage).

"Nick" (the owner) answered the phone. I asked Nick where our pizza was considering not only has it been over an hour since we placed our order but I specifically told them we're directly across the street - to which he responds in a thick Greek accent - "hold on let me call the driver, (2 seconds go by) he's there, he just got there" and hangs up without even letting me respond.

At this point I consult with my half-drunken friends as to what we should do next. The consensus is to call back and cancel the order - let's go with Toto's instead. I call back and ask to speak to our friend "Nick" to which I get a gruff "Nick is outside, what do you want?" reply. I explain the situation and the gentleman on the phone says "the driver is in Burlingame on El Camino, he'll be there in a little while, he got lost." Lost? I say, "did the driver not realize that we're directly across the street? Did you not tell him before he left?" To which they reply - "He's in Burlingame" (which is 4 miles south of us) and I say "forget it, we don't want the pizza anymore" and am immediately hung up on without another word.

So, we get back online, order from Toto's, and the pizza shows up about 30 minutes later.

The moral of this story is this: FUCK ZORBA'S PIZZA. The owner is rude (hung up on me twice!), the help is rude, the delivery drivers are incompetent, and their website is a miserable excuse for a www built 10 years ago.

My first and only experience with Zorba's Pizza in San Bruno was terrible - and with no apology or even attempt to answer my most basic concerns. Do yourelf a favor and get your pizza somewhere else.

Shawna's Vivid Dream

Shawna
Shawna is back. Haven't heard from her in a while. We've been IM buddies for years. We met on Friendster back in the day and have been chatting off and on ever since. What's funny is that we've never actually met in person - she lives up in Vancouver and I'm down here in San Francisco - but I consider her a great friend. She's one of the few people I know who still practices Judaism and she's involved in the community both as a teacher and as a subscriber to the faith.

She writes me this morning:

[03.03 - 10:30AM] Shawna: woah
[03.03 - 10:30AM] Shawna: i had this crazy dream
[03.03 - 10:30AM] Shawna: go read my journal

And so I read her journal and I loved the dream and her description of it. It sounded so vivid and surreal. Just beautiful in a very touching way. I rarely remember my own dreams and so hearing the dreams of others is really nice. In a way, it made my morning. I've been in such a fabulous mood lately (despite my recent computer troubles) and Shawna's dream just added to that. Thanks for sharing Shawna!
