Tip: Find Low Gas Prices In Your City

posted: Wednesday December 28, 2005 - 11:06 AM

Tracking the lowest gas prices in your region
These two sites allow you to keep track of gas prices in your area. GasBuddy is the better looking of the two with limited banner ads and good structure. GasPriceWatch uses a pretty awful color palette and has plenty of advertisements but the content is stronger with breakdowns of gasoline grade and when the information was posted.

Both will get you the information you need in a hurry. Somewhere else I learned that Tuesdays are the best day to buy. My own tip: remember that Arco charges 45 cents to use your debit card so while they are often the cheapest big-name brand you should remember to factor in their convenience charges.

For those with wireless access on your phones this might make for a clever way to find the closest gas station where you're travelling in unfamiliar territory.

Real Simple Guide: Look Great in Every Photo
Real simple releases another one of their simple guides to better living - this time in the form of how to look your best in photographs. With their panel of 8 different experts, Real Simple tackles issues such as: looking too posed, visible wrinkles, shiny skin, double chin, closed eyes (my favorite suggestion - have the photographer count to 3 and open your eyes!), exaggerated facial features, the fake smile, red eye, and taking your cue from stars on the red carpet.

There's some genuinely helpful suggestions here that benefits anyone who finds themselves in lots of pictures.

R.I.P Internet Explorer 5 for Mac

R.I.P Internet Explorer 5 for Mac
Second only to Netscape 4, Internet Explorer for the Mac has been the bane of web developers for years. One can only dream of Netscape 4's demise but the same dream for IE Mac is about to occur. While Microsoft announced back in 2003 that development on IE for the Mac would cease it has still be available for download from the Mactopia website.

This announcement takes it one step further stating that as of December 31, 2005 support for IE on the Mac will cease entirely and as of January 31, 2006 Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download.

Choicest quote from the website: "It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari." Amen to that !

Google Transit Trip Planner

Google Transit Trip Planner
One of the best things about working at Google (besides you know - working at GOOGLE) is a policy known as "20 percent time," where engineers are encouraged to spend 1 day a week (20% of their time) developing a pet project.

Not too long ago, a few engineers from San Francisco, New York, and Zurich - all of whom regularly use public transportation - decided that being able to plan local trips without having to go to multiple websites would be a useful product. So they devoted their 20 percent time to building it. As it happens, a lot of people thought this was a great idea, and the small team quickly grew with "twenty-percenters" from across Google.

Today sees the launch of this latest Google Labs experiment: Google Transit Trip Planner. With it, commuters will be able to easily access public transit schedules, routes, and plan trips using their local public transportation options. This first release covers only the Portland, Oregon metro area, but they are working to expand coverage very soon.

Portland was chosen as the first metro as they are a considered a technological leader in public transportation
